Technology is most powerful when it starts with people

MyCare4U is proud to be a Partner of the Monash Assistive Technology and Society (MATS) Centre. We are joining a community focused on technology that supports people with disability to live more self-directed lives.

For MyCare4U, this is a valuable connection between disability-focused research and the realities of everyday support. It gives us new opportunities to learn, contribute practical sector insight and stay connected with ideas that can make technology more accessible, useful and human.

A centre shaped around real-world needs

MATS brings together technology and design, social science, education, economics and health. Its work is community-focused, connecting research with the experiences and priorities of people with disability and the organisations that support them.

The Centre’s published work spans communication and information access, inclusive education and employment, artificial intelligence-based assistive technology, cultural participation and inclusive healthcare.

This breadth reflects something MyCare4U believes strongly: good technology begins with the person. A device, app or digital service only creates value when it fits someone’s goals, preferences, environment and everyday life.

Four valuable partnership opportunities

Monash University identifies four key opportunities for Partners of MATS:

  • Staying informed through updates about MATS activities, events and current work.
  • Contributing community insight by providing input into the Centre’s planning and development.
  • Connecting with expertise through access to Monash researchers and students.
  • Continuing to learn through invitations to MATS webinars and other events.

These opportunities give MyCare4U another way to connect community experience, disability support and accessible innovation. We can bring practical perspectives into sector conversations while keeping our own team connected to relevant learning.

How MyCare4U will turn connection into practical value

Our team works where technology meets everyday life: communication, digital access, community participation, learning and confidence. Through the MATS partner network, we intend to strengthen that work by:

  • keeping our support teams informed about relevant accessibility and assistive-technology developments;
  • bringing practical disability-support perspectives into conversations about technology and community needs;
  • looking beyond product features to usability, accessibility, privacy, reliability and ongoing support;
  • sharing useful information that helps participants and families ask better questions; and
  • staying open to new learning, events and future opportunities through the MATS community.

Technology should earn its place by making a real task easier, safer, more accessible or more independent for the person using it.

People-first assistive technology

The current NDIS guide to assistive technology places the participant’s goals, disability-related needs, evidence and safety at the centre of decision-making. When exploring a device, app or system, MyCare4U encourages five practical questions:

  1. What does the person want to do?
    Start with the task, barrier or goal—not the product.
  2. Will it work in real life?
    Consider the person’s home, community, routines, communication preferences, sensory needs and existing equipment.
  3. Can it be trialled first?
    A real-world trial can show whether the technology is comfortable, reliable and genuinely useful.
  4. What advice or evidence is needed?
    The right evidence depends on the technology, its complexity, risk and the participant’s circumstances.
  5. What support is needed afterwards?
    Setup, training, maintenance and follow-up can be just as important as the technology itself.

Looking ahead

MyCare4U sees this partnership as a long-term learning and contribution opportunity. We look forward to engaging with MATS activities, bringing real-world support perspectives into the conversation and sharing useful developments with our community.

This is the kind of connection we value: forward-looking, community-informed and grounded in the choices and everyday lives of people with disability.
